A Sensational Victory at the Carolina International CCI4*S

Picture this: An intensely challenging competition, a seasoned rider, and four dynamic horses. One would think the rider would feel a sense of immense pressure. Well, for American 5-star event rider Liz Halliday, it was all just another day at work.

At the heart of the Setters’ Run Farm Carolina International Horse Trials CCI4*S, located in the idyllic setting of the Carolina Horse Park, Halliday stood tall and composed amidst a whirlwind of competition. Among her four horses, Miks Master C—a 12-year-old bay gelding—held the top spot. Despite the mounting pressure, this dynamic duo cruised through a faultless show jumping round.

However, advanced-level eventing keeps its spectacles on their toes; with a series of unexpected twists and turns, predicting the outcome is quite the challenge.

A Nail-Biting Showdown

On Saturday, Halliday surprised spectators by managing a steady course on four horses with only one dropped rail. A marked difference saw Cooley Quicksilver fall to the sixth position, while Cooley Moonshine maintained a secure second place, albeit being withdrawn before cross-country. On the other hand, Cooley Nutcracker held a promising fourth.

As the day unfolded, the renowned course designer, Ian Stark's series of 35 cross-country efforts saw changes in leaderboard standings. Yet, against all odds, Halliday and Miks Master C clinched the win—a victory that saw them effortlessly crossing the finish flags within the time limit.

"He was organized at all the questions and galloped well. He did come back to me,” said an elated Halliday, attributing the win to the grandeur and precision of her horse.

From Prediction to Reality

The event did not fall short of prophecies, with EquiRatings' 2024 predictions aligning perfectly with the outcome. Their statistical models had earlier indicated excellent chances of Halliday and Miks Master C emerging at the top. It was a sure-shot indication that predictive analytics and sports indeed go hand in hand.

Coaching That Made a Difference

Behind every successful athlete are dedicated coaches. For Halliday, the guidance from her Olympian coaches—Peter Wylde and Erik Duvander—was instrumental. Expressing her gratitude, she noted how their calming presence and expert advice helped her maintain her focus amidst the thrilling competition.

Runner-up and Third Position Achievers

The event also saw resounding successes from the other competitors. Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Blake rose to the second position, reflecting an impressive performance with just 2.8-time faults after cross-country.

Next in line, Meghan O'Donoghue with her off-track Thoroughbred, Palm Crescent, took the third place with a score of 30.9. Their performance added just 1.6 time faults to their sub-30 dressage score.

As the event stood to testify, challenger or champion, each competitor brought to the field their unique strength and spirit, painting the canvas of the Carolina International CCI4*S with strokes of dedication, skill, and an undying love for the sport.
