What is Gold Label show care, and which product do you actually need?

Gold Label show care is a range of grooming products made for the last 48 hours before a show: coat sprays and lotions that add shine and stop tangles, whiteners for socks and blazes, black and dark pigment sticks for hooves and points, glitter for manes and tails, and clipper oil to keep blades running cleanly. Pick by the job in front of you - shine (Gold Label Equigloss, from £6.07), detangle and condition (Gold Label Mane Tail & Coat Spray, £6.10), whitening (Gold Label Show White Powder, £7.85), sparkle (Gold Label Sparkle Glitter Gel, from £4.94) or clipper upkeep (Gold Label Clipper Oil, from £6.18). This collection holds 20 Gold Label show care lines in total.

How do you build a show-day kit that actually works?

Start with a clean coat, not a shiny one

Shine products sit on top of the coat, so anything underneath shows through. Bathe first with the Gold Label Mane Coat & Tail Shampoo/Conditioner (£4.82) or, if you want to lift a specific colour, the Gold Label Colour Enhancing Shampoo (£7.38). Let the coat dry properly before you spray anything on top.

Then shine, then finish

Gold Label Equigloss (from £6.07) goes on next for gloss and to help the coat shed marks from tack, grass and bedding. Gold Label Mane Tail & Coat Spray (£6.10) does the detangling work. Keep both away from the saddle and girth area - a slippery patch under tack is the one place you do not want shine.

Whites and darks last

Whitening is the messiest job, so leave it until the coat is done. Gold Label Show White Powder (£7.85) brushes into dry legs; Gold Label Show White Paste (£6.88) works into smaller marks; Gold Label Show White Express (£12.55) is the quick option once you are already at the showground. For dark points, Gold Label Blacker Than Black (£9.72) or the Gold Label Show Black Mini Stick (£4.37) tidy up scars, hooves and muzzles.

Sparkle is optional - and rule-dependent

Gold Label Sparkle Glitter Gel (£4.94), Sparkle Glitter Spray (£6.88) and Sparkle Hoof Varnish (£9.33) are popular for fun rides, fancy dress and unaffiliated classes. Always check your society or show rules first, because affiliated classes often restrict artificial enhancement.

What about clipping and coat prep?

A show coat usually starts with a clip, and blades that run hot pull hair and leave lines. Gold Label Clipper Oil (from £6.18) keeps blades lubricated and cool during the job. The 250ml pump bottle suits precise, in-hand oiling; the 500ml (£7.84) is better if you clip several horses in a session. Oil little and often rather than heavily once, and brush the hair out of the blades between passes.

Sizes: single bottle or yard size?

If you show a handful of times a year, the 500ml bottles are the sensible buy - they last a season and take up little room in a grooming box. If you run a yard, a livery or a competition string, the Gold Label Mane Tail & Coat Lotion in 2.5 litre (£14.18) or 5 litre (£26.29) works out far better per use and can be decanted into a spray bottle. Note that lotions are usually applied by hand or sponge, while sprays are ready to go straight from the trigger.

Gold Label show care: your questions answered

What is the difference between Gold Label Equigloss and the Mane Tail & Coat Spray?

Equigloss (from £6.07) is primarily a coat gloss - it puts a high shine on the body and helps the coat shed marks from tack, grass and bedding. The Gold Label Mane Tail & Coat Spray (£6.10) is a detangling and conditioning spray aimed at manes and tails, so the brush and comb pull through more easily. Many people use both: the spray for the hair, the gloss for the body.

Powder, paste or express - which whitener should I choose?

Gold Label Show White Powder (500g, £7.85) is the workhorse for four white legs and a full tail - you brush it into a dry, clean coat. Gold Label Show White Paste (400g, £6.88) is easier to target on a single stubborn stain or a small patch. Gold Label Show White Express (400ml, £12.55) is the fastest option for a last-minute fix once you are already at the show. Whichever you use, apply it to a dry coat and brush the excess out before you go in.

Can I use shine spray under the saddle?

No - keep coat gloss and detangling sprays well away from the saddle, girth and numnah area. Anything that makes hair slippery can let tack shift, and a slipping saddle is a genuine safety risk. The same goes for the reins area if you have sprayed a mane. Apply, then wipe the tack contact points with a clean damp cloth before you tack up.

Is glitter allowed in the show ring?

It depends entirely on the class and the governing society. Gold Label Sparkle Glitter Gel (£4.94), Sparkle Glitter Spray (£6.88) and Sparkle Hoof Varnish (£9.33) are widely used at fun rides, fancy dress, Pony Club events and unaffiliated shows, but many affiliated showing and dressage rules restrict artificial enhancement of the coat, mane or hooves. Check the current rulebook for your class before show day rather than on the morning.

My horse has sensitive skin - what should I be careful of?

Show care products are cosmetic grooming aids, not treatments. If your horse has sore, broken, scabby or itchy skin, speak to your vet first and do not apply grooming products to the affected area. On healthy skin, it is still sensible to patch test a new product on a small area, follow the label directions, and stop using it if you see any reaction. Never use a whitener, glitter or gloss over a wound or a healing scab.

How much Gold Label show care do I need for a season?

For one horse showing occasionally, a 500ml coat spray, a 500g whitener and a mini stick will usually see you through a season. If you are prepping several horses, the Gold Label Mane Tail & Coat Lotion in 2.5 litre (£14.18) or 5 litre (£26.29) is the more economical route, and a 500ml Gold Label Clipper Oil (£7.84) will cover a busy clipping period.
