How do I know whether I need a Click'N Go, T-Bar or standard part?
Look at the front of the rug before you order, because the three closure systems are not interchangeable.
Click'N Go
The front closes with a magnetic fitting that snaps together rather than buckling. If that is what you have, the parts you want are the Bucas Click'N Go Magnetic Front Strap (£12.50), the Bucas Chest Extender Click'N Go Magnetic (from £25.00), the Bucas Front Extender For Click'N Go System (£14.00) and the Bucas Click'N Go Panel Extender (£31.00).
T-Bar
T-Bar is a separate Bucas front-closure system and takes its own extender. The matching part here is the Bucas Chest Extender T-Bar Magnetic, from £19.00, sold in 12cm and 24cm in black or navy.
Standard buckle front
The standard non-magnetic buckle closure. The Bucas Chest Extender Standard, from £14.00, adds either 12cm or 24cm of room.

How much extra room does a chest extender give?
The extenders are sold in two lengths. A 12cm extender is the usual choice for a horse that has filled out slightly over winter or for a rug that sits just a little tight when the neck cover is fitted. A 24cm extender is for a genuinely broad-chested horse or a rug that is a size down from ideal. Fitting an extender is not a substitute for the right rug size: the rug should still sit at the point of shoulder without the withers being pulled down. Use the Bucas Size Tape (£4.00) to measure from the centre of the chest to the point of the buttock if you are unsure what size the horse actually takes.
Why replace parts instead of the rug?
A leg strap at £8.00 or a snap hook at £2.69 costs a fraction of a turnout rug, and a rug with one failed strap is otherwise perfectly serviceable. Replacing worn straps early also protects the rug itself: a rug held on by one leg strap slips sideways, and a slipped rug rubs at the shoulder and withers. Checking straps, surcingles and clips every few weeks during winter turnout catches most failures before they cause a problem. If a rug has lost its water repellency but the fabric is sound, washing it with the correct rug wash and re-proofing with Bucas Rug Conditioner is generally the cheaper route.
Bucas rug care: wash and conditioner
Ordinary detergent can strip the water-repellent finish from technical rug fabrics and clog the breathable membrane. Bucas Rug Wash (£144.00 for 5 litres) is intended for waterproof rug fabric, and Bucas Rug Conditioner (£119.00 for 5 litres, or £134.00 for six 500ml bottles) is used after washing to help restore the repellency. Both are supplied in yard-sized quantities, which suits a livery yard or anyone rugging several horses; wash first, then condition, and always follow the instructions on the container and the rug's own care label.
Bucas accessories: frequently asked questions
Will Bucas leg straps and surcingles fit rugs from other brands?
These parts are sold as Bucas spares and we can only confirm fit on Bucas rugs. The simple items, such as the Bucas Elastic Loop Leg Strap (£8.00) and the Bucas Deluxe Leg Straps Swivel Hooks (£12.00), may suit other rugs with similar fittings, but compare the clip size and strap length against the part you are replacing first. The Click'N Go and T-Bar items are closure-specific and are intended for the matching Bucas system, so they are not a safe bet on another brand.
What size internal surcingle do I need?
The Bucas Internal Surcingle is £21.00 and is sized to the rug rather than the horse. The 35cm version covers rugs in the 85-120 range and the 40cm version covers 125-135. The simplest check is to measure the old surcingle from end to end, or read the size label sewn into the rug. Colour options in stock include navy/silver and black/silver.
Can I just replace the clip rather than the whole surcingle?
Yes, if the webbing and stitching are still sound. The Bucas Snap Hook 50mm For Internal Surcingles is £2.69 and replaces just the hardware. Replace the whole surcingle instead if the webbing is frayed, the elastic has gone slack, or the stitching at the fold has pulled, because those failures tend to come back.
Which chest extender fits my rug, 12cm or 24cm?
Choose 12cm if the rug fastens but pulls, and 24cm if the two front edges will not meet at all. Match the closure type as well as the length: Bucas Chest Extender Standard is £14.00 for 12cm and £16.00 for 24cm; Bucas Chest Extender T-Bar Magnetic is £19.00 and £21.00; Bucas Chest Extender Click'N Go Magnetic is £25.00 for 12cm and £29.00 for 24cm.
Can I wash a Bucas rug in ordinary detergent?
It is best avoided. Household detergents and biological powders leave residues that hold water and can strip the repellent finish from technical rug fabric. Always check the rug's own care label first, and never tumble dry a waterproof turnout.
What is the Bucas Size Tape for?
The Bucas Size Tape is £4.00 and is a tape for measuring your horse so you can work out the right rug size before you order. Measure along the horse's side from the centre of the chest to the point of the buttock, with the horse standing square on level ground. It is worth measuring before buying extenders, since a rug that needs a 24cm extender may simply be a size too small.
Fitting checks before turnout
- Leg straps should link through each other so they sit clear of the hocks, with a hand's width of slack.
- Surcingles want roughly a hand's depth between the webbing and the belly.
- Chest closures should meet without pulling the rug tight over the point of shoulder, even with an extender fitted.
- Check clips and hooks for corrosion and swivel movement after wet spells.
- Any rubbing at the shoulder, withers or chest means the fit is wrong, not that the horse needs to get used to it.
