How do I measure my dog for a rug?

Measure along the spine, from the base of the neck (where a collar sits) to the base of the tail, with your dog standing square. That number in inches is the size you order. It takes about ten seconds and a treat.

What if my dog falls between two sizes?

Go up rather than down. A rug that is slightly long is far more comfortable than one that pulls tight across the shoulders. Deep-chested breeds such as greyhounds and lurchers, and broad-shouldered dogs such as staffies, often need the larger of the two options. Once it is on, check that your dog can walk, sit and lie down without the rug dragging at the front — and that you can slide a couple of fingers under the chest strap.

Which sizes cover which dogs?

As a rough guide: 10 to 14 inch suits small terriers, dachshunds and toy breeds; 16 to 20 inch covers spaniels, collies and medium crossbreeds; 22 to 26 inch fits labradors, retrievers and larger working dogs; and 28 to 30 inch is for the biggest breeds. Always measure rather than guess — two dogs of the same breed can be a size apart.

What does the fill weight actually mean?

The gram figure — 50g, 150g, 300g — is the weight of the insulation inside the rug, exactly as it is on horse rugs. Higher grams means more warmth. The 50g Freedom is essentially a waterproof shell with a little warmth, useful in autumn and spring when the main enemy is rain. The 150g is the sensible middle choice for a British winter. The 300g is for genuinely cold, still days, or for dogs that stand around rather than run about.

Be careful not to over-rug. A thick-coated dog charging round a field in a 300g rug can get too warm, which is why the breathable outer matters — it lets moisture vapour escape rather than trapping it against the coat. If your dog comes back damp underneath the rug rather than on top of it, drop a fill weight.

What is the difference between the Freedom, Green Line, Show-Line and Cosy rugs?

Freedom Rip-Stop is the workhorse. Ripstop fabric uses reinforcing threads woven into a grid, so a small snag on a fence or a bramble does not run into a long tear — which is exactly what happens to dog coats around a yard. It comes in three fill weights, so you can buy the same design in a lighter or heavier version as the seasons change.

Green Line is the eco-focused option, made with responsible manufacturing in mind, and across the standard and Large versions it covers 12 inch (30) right up to 30 inch (75). Both use a waterproof-breathable 600D ripstop outer with reflective strips on the rear sides and an adjustable belly panel.

Show-Line is the smarter-looking fleece rug with a faux-fur collar, in standard sizes from £35 and Large sizes from £43. Cosy is the faux-rabbit-fur-lined, quilted option in 18 inch (45) and 20 inch (50) at £43 — a warm rug for a dog who spends more time supervising than sprinting. Note that both the Show-Line and the Cosy have a waterproof belly pad rather than a waterproof outer, so they are warmth-and-looks rugs for drier days rather than turnout-style rain protection.

Are Bucas Therapy dog rugs worth it for an older dog?

Looking after a dog rug

Let mud dry, then brush it off rather than scrubbing a wet rug — you will take less of the waterproof finish off that way. Check the chest and belly straps for wear every few weeks, since that is where the strain sits.
